First Aid Boxes - Types of FAB

First Aid Boxes (FAB's) of the 1950\60's
Dimensions (maximum on the lid): 273 mm (10 3\4") x 210 mm (8 1\4") x 65 mm (2 1\2") - there are other similar looking FAB's but they are about 70% of the correct size.
Locking mechanism: sliding.
Lettering: John Mastrangelo says that, 'OUTFIT, FIRST - AID GENERAL LARGE' is the right one for the Champ.
Other lettering that could have been seen on the Champ FAB: FIRST AID KIT STAFF CAR; OUTFIT, FIRST - AID, LARGE FOR ARMOURED FIGHTING VEHICLES FIRST AID, see pictures below:

Original FAB's are getting harder to find now, especially with original contents and in good condition and, if so, could be worth £50/60 or more.

OUTFIT, FIRST - AID GENERAL LARGE

FIRST AID KIT STAFF CAR

OUTFIT, FIRST - AID, LARGE FOR ARMOURED FIGHTING VEHICLES FIRST AID dated April 1945

(below) This is a reproduction FAB by Roger Van Gasse - the repro is so good I could not tell it from an original - the photo shows the sliding locking mechanism and a different lettering, OUTFIT FIRST AID LARGE FOR AFV MT, I would guess Roger took this from an original. There are two clips on the inside back, these are for scissors, on Champ era FAB's there are no scissor clips.

OUTFIT FIRST AID LARGE FOR AFV MT

(below) A NATO FAB showing different snap-over type clips.

(below) Just for the record, a FAB of the 1990's with an expiry date 1996. The lid has no clips and is just an interference fit on the body. If an original empty tin is found then the contents of this one would at least give some contents and, on any vehicle, it's wise to carry a FAB.

(below) This is a label on the inside of the lid, 'OUTFIT, FIRST - AID GENERAL LARGE', dated January 1951, the written note top left, "removed March 1959". The item removed was Chloroform. These labels can be reproduced on a word processor.

(below) The original contents of, 'OUTFIT, FIRST - AID GENERAL LARGE'. My repro main label can be seen top right, the repro label is shown in detail in the second picture, if anyone wants the .jpg file at printable density e-mail me. The other documentation seen is shown in detail further down.

Bottom: different style of scissors in 1990's FAB. The original style scissors can be bought on eBay, search, surgical scissors.
